"Eenie Meanie 'In-Be 'Tweenie?" 13-year-old Callie Kent mutters, as she makes her way toward the office at On Stage Dance Studio. In keeping with the rules of the dance company, Callie and her friends had re-auditioned to maintain their spots for the coming year. Though most of her friends would be returning to the 'Tween Company, Mili Johnson, and Brianna Marie have moved up to Senior Company. And most likely, so has the bane of her existence, Lori McKenna, although Callie has no way to confirm it. Fraught with angst over the thought of being separated from some of her friends, Callie's own acceptance letter had brought yet more trepidation. She has been labeled an 'In-Be 'Tween, ' or an 'In-Be 'Tweenie, ' as Callie morphed the term in her own mind. Adding insult to injury, Ms. Elizabeth had put off explaining its meaning until the week of fall registration. Approaching the office, Callie's mind races with apprehension. Where does she fit into the company? Why has Ms. Elizabeth delayed this discussion? Hasn't she always given dance her best effort? And isn't she already facing enough, with her first year of high school, and the strenuous IB program approaching? And then it hits her, one final blow of doubt.
