Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Calendarium Genealogicum, Vol. 1 of 2: Henry III, And Edward I
In a manner somewhat analogous, the title given to the present publication Calendarium G enealogicmn, has been selected because the extraction of the genealogical matter contained in the Inquisitions has been its chief object, although the attainm ent of various others has been attempted which no one term would be sufficiently com prehensive to express. This will appear more clearly when the scope and plan of this Calendar are described. It is to the lnquisitions pesi mortem, ' properly so called, that I must first draw attention; Records of such superior import that they have been stiled the l?roprietary map of England, ' and which, for genealogical, biographical, or topographical purposes, are not surpassed by any other class of our ancient Records, unequalled as these are by the archives of other nations as respects their bulk, their extent, or their general interest.
