During the years 1915 to 1919 the actual calendaring of the manuscripts was entirely suspended, and only completed in the autumn of 1920. Owing to post-war costs and other difficulties, printing could not be begun until the autumn of 1924, but since the editor had in the meantime assumed other duties, many subsequent interruptions in the tedious work of revising proofs and indexing have caused further postponements of publication. For this delay sincere apologies are given and grateful acknow ledgement made of the indulgent forbearance of the late Sir Arthur Cowley and of the Delegates of the Clarendon Press.
