The Irish State Papers for 1571-1575 contain accounts of some of the most important events in the history of the sixteenth century under the first lord deputyship of Sir William Fitzwilliam, namely the colonila project of Sir Thomas Smith, the Ulster 'enterprise'of the first Earl of Essex and the massacre at Rathlin Island in 1575.
