Great historical timepiece of social life on coastal New England for those on a working waterfront. Main focus is a marine engineer who is risking his career to construct a difficult and risky lighthouse on time and on budget in the challenging weather extremes of Long Island Sound. Amidst that is mixed romantic interests of characters and heroic deeds of crew who never quit in the face of extreme weather. The writing is good though it borders on caddy at times, and openly expresses racism of the era which is a cold slap from a modern perspective, but is not out of the ordinary for a book . Accepting all this, "Caleb West" book shines for it's insight into what true grit the workers of coastal construction must have had to accomplish great feats with the tools of their day.
