Cabbages and Kings (1904) - A collection of interlinked stories set in a fictitious Central American country called the Republic of Anchuria. The plot contains the elements in the poem: shoes and ships and sealing wax, cabbages and kings. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: American author William Sydney Porter (1862-1910) wrote under the pen name O. Henry. He was known mainly for his short stories which often had surprise endings. He was born in North Carolina and worked as a pharmacist. He later moved to a Texas sheep ranch and worked as a ranch hand, cook, and babysitter. He was known for his wit and story-telling, among other talents.
