This book is mainly a photo album and scrapbook of the Burton Baptist Church, spanning its 90-year existence. Burton Church has been blessed from the beginning with dedicated folks who love the Lord, His church, and their life so much that they cannot resist taking pictures, often with a fervor many show only for their firstborn. In the 1920s, taking, developing, and preserving photographs required significant effort. The Leo Rich family and V.A. Vanderhoof were able to manage it. Following in their footsteps came Grace Carlisle with her little red Kodak box camera. Noni Bade stepped forward with her Polaroid as Grace and her camera began to age. And most recently, Dana Mead has taken the baton, with her digital camera and an ardor for snapping photos that only a digital camera can slake. From the beginning, under L.H. Shuttlesworth's leadership, and with the encouragement of district missionary V.A. Vanerhoof, the members if Burton Church kept scrupulous records. L.H. "Uncle" Shttlesworth kept letters, postcards, sermon outlines, and copies of letters he sent. There are meticulous records of church activities, often recorded in the official books printed by first the American Baptist Convention and then the Southern Baptist Convention. These records were kept with accuracy and attention to detail for years and years. The names of those faithful scribes are listed in the back of this book. Where appropriate, the author has included notes from business meetings and summaries of major decisions and events. Together with the photos, they help present a chronology of church history.
