Publisher's Synopsis

Burnley Borough Bobbies: The first ten years of a police officer's life in the 1960's by Mike Griffin: Mike joined the Burnley Borough Police in 1959 as a cadet and was appointed a constable in 1960. This account mainly covers the period to 1969 when the force was amalgamated with the Lancashire Constabulary along with other borough forces. During this time, after initial training, he was a beat officer, a motor cyclist, a detective and a uniform patrol sergeant. He details many incidents dealt with during this period describing the wide variety, the humour as well as the sadness and the characters he was privileged to work alongside. There is a chapter on the history of the force and how it came to be created. The final chapter covers some of his various postings over the next 30 years. Mike went on to become the longest serving officer in the force at the time of his retirement in 1999 having worked everywhere in East Lancashire. At this time he was the Chief Superintendent in command of Pennine Division which covered the Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale Local Authorities.
