Publisher's Synopsis
This book discusses the issues of economic, political and social transformation in post?1989 Bulgaria. Its main goal is to assess realities in this South European country in the context of changes in Eastern Europe. The economic and political developments in Bulgaria are discussed in comparative analysis with developments in post-communist Europe. The main questions addressed in the study are: What is the starting point (economy, state, civil society) in 1989?; What are the main trends in the changes of the state, parties, civil society and the economy (economic development strategies, government policies, privatization, foreign investments, external balance, costs of transition)?; What is the state and what are the prospects for the economic and political relations with Europe (and particularly with the European Union) and the rest of the world?; What are the main challenges in finding the new identity of Bulgaria and her place in the region and in Europe? The volume contains contributions from scholars both from Bulgaria and from Western countries (USA, Canada, Sweden).
