Publisher's Synopsis
This collection of essays pays tribute to Monsignor Robert Trisco, a dedicated historian, teacher, and priest at the Catholic University of America and the longtime editor of theCatholic Historical Review. Presenting the work of some of the finest scholars of U.S. Catholic history, the essays offer intriguing insights into topics ranging from spirituality and the intellectual life to the Church's relationship with the U.S. government and the Church's own internal organizational development. Many of the contributors address topical issues in the history of the American Church, such as preaching in the early days, slavery and the Catholic Church, disciplinary issues, and higher education. A number of the articles highlight important events and individuals that have often escaped scholarly consideration in standard texts on U.S. Catholic history.

Cardinal William H. Keeler, Archbishop of Baltimore, provides a foreword to the volume.
Joseph C. Linck, C.O., campus chaplain at the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, and Chatham College, is a lecturer in church history at Saint Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Raymond Kupke is archivist for the Diocese of Paterson, New Jersey, teaches church history at Immaculate Conception Seminary, and is pastor of Holy Family Parish in Florham Park.
