Charles "Bugs" Hartman never hesitated to take a risk when it seemed likely to improve his life and/or the life of his family. As a youth in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, the man affectionately known as Bugs became the class president and the captain of his high school football team. Considered one of the best football players in the western half of Pennsylvania, Bugs earned a scholarship to play at the college level. Instead, he decided to get married to his high school sweetheart and to enter the workforce. His only child was born in 1941, and just a few years later Bugs left the United States to join the Army in World War II. Rising to the rank of corporal, Bugs' life was never quite the same following the war. A desire to challenge himself grew within Bugs and nothing would get in his way.
