In all the research into poverty and living standards in the UK in the post war period, budget standards methods have been neglected. This study reestablishes budget standards methods and uses them to estimate the relative needs of different families, the costs of children and lone parents and to assess the adequacy of social security benefits. Detailed budgets have been derived for six family types at both a low-cost and a modest-but-adequate level.
