Brother Jacob is a novella written by English author George Eliot. The story follows the life of David Faux, a young man who is determined to make a name for himself in the world. David is not particularly intelligent or talented, but he is ambitious and has a strong desire to succeed.David's first attempt at success comes when he decides to become a religious minister. He attends a seminary and becomes a deacon, but his lack of intelligence and understanding of theology leads to his downfall. He is eventually dismissed from the seminary and forced to find a new path in life.David then decides to become a businessman and opens a shop selling fabrics. He is successful at first, but his lack of business acumen and understanding of the market eventually leads to his downfall once again.Throughout the novella, David is constantly trying to reinvent himself and find success, but he is always thwarted by his own limitations. The story is a commentary on the dangers of blind ambition and the importance of self-awareness and humility.
