Publisher's Synopsis
When the first shotgun pellets hit the metal draft diverters on the roof she thought it was hailing, but she was wide awake when the barrage of automatic weapons fire sprayed the lower level of the house and shattered nearly everything downstairs and on the porch. Lorie sprang off her bed and grabbed the rifle from its hooks over the fireplace in the master bedroom, unlocking the safety device from the trigger with the key she kept attached to her dog tags as she ran into the hall. Lorie peeked through the curtains in the dark hallway and wasn't surprised that the shooters made no effort to conceal themselves behind the oversized dual wheel pickup truck. They had come about ten feet closer to the front steps on foot, certain they were in no danger. After all, there were only "women" in the house and their boss had obviously neglected to tell them there were also children. That probably would have made no difference anyways. There were six of them shooting, standing in the pouring rain with automatic weapons, but under cover of their steady firing, Lorie calmly shot four of them, then picked off the last two as they ran for the truck. They fell and lay still. The others weren't moving, either. For the first time in her life she wished she'd shot to kill.Glen wasn't happy. Neither were the ambulance crews and the state police crime unit nor the dour state police CSI Lieutenant who had come all the way from Newport. They were wet. They were monsoon type wet. They had six heavily armed men with serious gunshot wounds. The Whitley house, on the ground floor was riddled with bullets."Mrs. Whitley, you gravely injured those men, you...... "Captain Whitley." Glen said quietly, "This is Captain Loren Whitley, United States Marine Corp, Reserve. She's a JAG lawyer.""The kids are asleep." Carmen told Lorie, pouring herself a cup of coffee and nodding to Glen with a smile. "It's been a heckuva night." "Kids!" The state police lieutenant whirled on Lorie. "You got kids in this house and you shot people.""I suppose I could have let them kill us." Lorie said, and Glen choked on his coffee. "But I'm really quite opposed to being dead."Carmen and Glen laughed and earned themselves a glare from the lieutenant. He saw nothing funny about a female, even a female marine officer, randomly shooting people. He wanted to arrest her, if for no other reason than she got him out of bed at two AM and he had to drive for another half hour to get to her house.
