The papers in this volume represent the fruits of over 40 years research on the military and administrative history of the Roman Empire and Roman Britain. In all cases, the aim of the author has been to provide solutions to problems, rather than to raise issues for discussion. The first paper here is on legions, the last on latrines. Between them come studies on the army of the imperial period and Roman frontiers; the operations of that army in Britain; and civilian life in Britain under Roman rule, not least the development of the cities which were the main vehicle of Roman civilisation and government.
