Publisher's Synopsis
'Shakespeare and Company' in Paris is one of the world's most famous bookshops. Originally opened in 1919 it became known as the haunt of literary giants such as Ernest Hemingway, George Bernard Shaw and Gertrude Stein. Sadly the shop was forced to close in 1941 when the owner refused to sell the last copy of Finnegans Wake to an occupying Nazi officer, but in 1964 another bookshop, Le Mistral, resurrected the name Shakespeare and Company and once again it became a meeting place for writers. This is the tale of Jeremy Mercer's time there, and in particular his relationship with the octogenarian owner, George.
