Publisher's Synopsis

The church of Santa Maria Assunta, together with the Oratory of San Pellegrino, was part of a monastic complex that has its roots in the first centuries of Christianity, between the third and fourth centuries, when the body of a lay missionary, San Pellegrino, was buried on the site, who suffered martyrdom in Bominaco dying pierced by spears. A few centuries later, around the eighth, a first church was built on that tomb that was donated to the Benedictine abbey of Farfa, from which it became independent only in 1001. Of the whole complex today only the Church and the Oratory remain, two splendid examples of Abruzzo Romanesque architecture.

The date of construction of the church of Santa Maria Assunta is not defined but we can argue with certainty that it precedes the two dates on the pulpit, 1180, and on the altar, 1223, and therefore must refer to the period between the end of the eleventh and the beginning of the twelfth century.
