Publisher's Synopsis

Bombastes Furioso is a one-act burlesque tragic opera written by William Barnes Rhodes in 1873. The play is a parody of classical tragedies and tells the story of the tyrant king Bombastes, who rules the kingdom of Utopia with an iron fist. Bombastes is portrayed as a pompous and foolish character, who is obsessed with his own power and glory. He is surrounded by a cast of equally ridiculous characters, including his queen, Huncamunca, and his loyal general, Artaxominous. The play follows Bombastes as he attempts to conquer the neighboring kingdom of Arcadia. However, his plans are thwarted by the clever Arcadian prince, Artabazus, who outwits him at every turn. In the end, Bombastes is defeated and humiliated, and the play concludes with a comical epilogue.Bombastes Furioso is known for its witty dialogue, clever wordplay, and satirical take on classical tragedies. It is a classic example of Victorian burlesque theater, which was popular in the late 19th century. The play has been performed numerous times since its original publication and remains a beloved classic of the genre. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
