Si e talora osservato che alcune oche cenerine ave vano il becco e le zampe di color giallo-aranciato: ciò avviene soltanto negli individui sedentari dipendendo tale colorazione dallo strato di grasso sottocutaneo che si forma in quelle condizioni di vita.
Nei giovani il piumaggio è piu scuro che negli adulti, mancano le macchie nere sull'addome, il becco è cameo pallido od anche verde - giallastro, mancano assolutamente le pennuzze bianche alla base del becco. All'età di due anni cominciano ad apparire le macchie nere sull'addome e soltanto al 4° anno di età è raggiunto lo stato adulto.
