Elk blok bevat een veilige cryptografische hash van het vorige blok, een veilige tijdstempel en aanvullende transactiegegevens (doorgaans weergegeven als een zogenaamde Merkle-boom). Hoewel blockchain-records niet onveranderlijk zijn, kunnen blockchains door hun ontwerp als veilig worden beschouwd en een voorbeeld zijn van een gedistribueerd computersysteem met een hoge Byzantijnse fouttolerantie. De blockchain is beschreven als "een open, gedistribueerd grootboek dat transacties tussen twee partijen efficiënt en op een verifieerbare en permanente manier kan registreren". De blockchain is uitgevonden door een persoon (of een groep mensen) die de naam Satoshi Nakamoto gebruikt in 2008 om dienen als het openbare transactiegrootboek van de cryptocurrency bitcoin. De identiteit van Satoshi Nakamoto is tot op heden onbekend. De uitvinding van de blockchain voor bitcoin maakte het de eerste digitale valuta die het probleem van dubbele uitgaven oploste zonder de noodzaak van een vertrouwde autoriteit of centrale server. Het bitcoin-ontwerp heeft andere applicaties en blockchains geïnspireerd die leesbaar zijn voor het publiek en veel worden gebruikt door cryptocurrencies. De blockchain wordt gezien als een soort betalingsrail. Particuliere blockchains zijn voorgesteld voor zakelijk gebruik, maar Computerworld noemde het op de markt brengen van dergelijke geprivatiseerde blockchains zonder een goed beveiligingsmodel "snake oil". Anderen hebben echter betoogd dat blockchains met toestemming, mits zorgvuldig ontworpen, in de praktijk meer gedecentraliseerd en daarom veiliger kunnen zijn dan blockchains zonder toestemming.
