Synopsis:
Desolate house(1853) represents the highest point of the intellectual maturity of Dickens, his central work. Esther Summerson, abandoned at birth by her parents, is the protégé of John Jarndyce, a powerful, kind-hearted gentleman who has been suing for years over an inheritance. Esther has lived in Jarndyce's residence, Desolate House, since the age of eighteen, along with Ada and Richard, John's teenage cousins, orphaned and destitute because of the disputed inheritance, whom he tries to guide through life. The novel revolves around the biographical vicissitudes of Esther -whose story in the first person is interspersed with that of the narrator-, always struggling to find her identity, overcome her origin and succeed socially.
