The Biomedical Engineering Society was founded in 1968 to promote the increase of biomedical engineering knowledge and its utilization. Each year the Society has held a meeting for the presentation of technical papers and the conduct of Society business. Dedicated to the memory of the late Dr Kiichi Sagawa, the first of these two volumes contains papers in five general areas - respiration, thermoregulation, biorheology and the microcirculation, cardiac mechanics, and vascular hemodynamics. The second volume contains 45 papers in five general areas within which Biomedical Engineering is crossing the frontiers of knowledge. Biomedical instrumentation, life support technology and clinical engineering, noninvasive detection of tissue and organ system failure, including imaging and evaluation of implanted physiologic devices, mathematical models in molecular biology and physiology, biological signal analysis, and engineering aspects of cognitive sciences.
