This book, in which the design and operation of wastewater treatment systems are considered from a microbiological perspective, is based on the author's considerable experience as a teacher of courses in wastewater engineering. It covers a range of topics, starting with the fundamentals of microbiology, including bacterial metabolism, and moving through bacterial growth and chemical engineering aspects, to a detailed discussion of the operation of wastewater treatment plants, with an indication of the modifications that might be introduced. Particular emphasis is placed on the activated-sludge process, and each chapter includes worked examples. The text will be of use to first degree civil engineering students following a course in public health engineering, graduate students and public health engineers, first degree students of biotechnology, applied biology and microbiology.
