Publisher's Synopsis

Gustave Doré was born in Strasbourg in 1832. He was a child prodigy troublemaker, playing wild pranks on many people. At the age of fifteen, Doré began his career as a caricaturist for a French newspaper. In 1853, he was asked to illustrate the works of Lord Byron. That commission was followed by other work for British publishers, including an illustrated English Bible. In the 1860s, he illustrated a French edition of Cervantes's Don Quixote, and his depictions of the knight and his squire, Sancho Panza, became so famous that they influenced many other artists. He also illustrated an edition of Edgar Allan Poe's poem "The Raven."
