Publisher's Synopsis

The impact of road transport on the environment has become increasingly important during recent years. British and European environmental legislation is more stringent, and customers and the general public expect higher environmental standards from the road transport industry. This all has important implications for distribution centre management.;The purpose of this guide is to provide managers, irrespective of the size of the site or activity, with the basic techniques which will enable them to carry out best environmental practice and prevent adverse local impact. The guide should complement other environmental documentation or policies such as the Company's own environmental procedure, BS7750 environmental management systems and eco-management and audit schemes.;The advice given in this booklet is based on research supported by the Department of Transport and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council through the LINK Transport Infrastructure and Operations (TIO) programme. This is one of many LINK programmes which aim to bridge the gap between the research base and industry for the benefit of the UK economy. TIO focuses on four main themes: environmental impact, road safety, traffic congestion, and construction and maintenance, with the aim of stimulating industry's investment in relevant innovative research in support of a more efficient, cost effective and safer transport system.
