During Bently's journey, he is very eager to find a family to love and to love him back. Bently spends his days in search of his forever family, but he soon learns that the idea of what he believes he needs in a family, might not be what he finds. Lonely, yet eager, he sets out to find one. Along the way, he runs across old friends and acquaintances that point him in the right direction.
This book will teach you that family does not have to have the same skin, same culture, or even the same type of living quarters. Family is simply people who love and take care of each other.
I learned this while being a foster mom and now adoptive mom. Children struggle with so many different insecurities when they go into foster care. One of the issues, I have seen as a foster mom, is the idea of what a family looks like. Children come from all kinds of backgrounds and cultures. Not only do we need to teach the children that there is not a singular box to categorize people in, but we also need to appreciate the culture they come with. I will say that it can be very difficult to teach that lifestyle, but we have found, when we adopted a sibling set of seven, that it is possible to love children who are different than you and teach them to love others the same. Our moto in our family is this: There is a big ole world out there with lots of people who need love and we're just the nuts to do it!
