One of the great humanists of the six teenth century, the editor of the celebrated polyglot Bible of Antwerp, the friend of Fray Luis de Leon, Benito Arias Montano deserves an elaborate biography both for his own worth and owing to the interest of the times in which he lived, and the variety of affairs in which he took part on behalf of his master, Philip II of Spain. The following notes can hope to present but a slight sketch of the man who in his lifetime was known as the Spanish Jerome (r).
