Publisher's Synopsis
Only the Gospel of Luke records the exchange between Christ and one of the thieves crucified with Him, in which the thief asks, "'Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.' And Jesus said to him, 'Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise'" (Lk 23.42-43). This book brings together seventeen sermons centered upon the "good thief," which brings along with it connected themes: the cross, paradise, Christ's saving work, and more. Beginning with the earliest extant preaching on this topic in the sermons of St John Chrysostom, and including both Greek and Latin sources, this collection shows the ways in which various preachers and authors explored this text, and the way in which interpretations were borrowed, elaborated upon, and used in different ways over the centuries. Several of these sermons. appear in English for the first time.--Publisher.
