Publisher's Synopsis
The figure of Bede dominates the intellectual history of the early medieval West, and it is to him, his works, and the world in which he lived that the papers in this book are devoted. The first Jarrow lecture was in 1958, on the twelve hundred and seventy-third anniversary of the dedication of St Paul?s Church. Since then these annual lectures, delivered by a series of distinguished scholars, have come to make a fundamental contribution to our understanding of Bede and his place in the history of Anglo-Saxon England and medieval Christianity. - - Each lecture was originally published as a separate pamphlet, and the presentation of these volumes is designed to make this body of scholarship more readily available and more practical for library and reference uses. -
