Publisher's Synopsis
In ancient Mexican culture, the axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) was a symbol of fertility, rejuvenation and rebirth. This salamander was sacred to the Aztecs, and was often referred to as the "holy water" or "water dog" due to its ability to regenerate its own limbs. Axolotls are also known as Mexican walking fish, due to their deer-like walking gait.
The axolotl is native to central Mexico, and has been found in the Xochimilco canals of the Valley of Mexico, in the lakes of Chalco, Xochimilco and Texcoco, and in the surrounding streams and lakes. They are one of the world's most unique amphibious creatures and are an important species in their aquatic environment.
