Average American Boy

Along the road are points of light, and some of the ironies and enigmas of the Twentieth Century: poverty turns into comfort; racial animosity worsens; the taboos of sex give way to X-rated film and legalized abortion. Public education drops -- in Boy's words, 'like a heifer's ass'. Care of the mentally ill improves and worsens. Criminal justice reveals to Boy that it may not be just. Boy finds that for a life of hard work and hard play, all it takes is a little money and a friend in the shower and between the sheets.
