Publisher's Synopsis
Australia Twice Traversed is a book written by Ernest Giles, an Australian explorer who became known for his expeditions into the interior of Australia during the late 19th century. The book is a detailed account of his two major expeditions, the first in 1872-1873 and the second in 1875-1876, where he explored the uncharted regions of central and western Australia. In his first expedition, Giles set out from Adelaide with a small party of men and a number of camels, and travelled through the harsh desert terrain of the Great Victoria and Gibson Deserts. Along the way, he encountered numerous challenges, including water shortages, extreme heat, and the constant threat of attack by Aboriginal tribes. Despite these difficulties, Giles was able to push on and eventually reached the west coast of Australia, becoming one of the first Europeans to do so.In his second expedition, Giles set out from Perth and travelled eastward across the continent, exploring the regions that he had missed on his first journey. This time, he encountered even greater challenges, including a severe lack of water and the loss of several camels, but he was ultimately successful in his mission.Throughout the book, Giles provides vivid descriptions of the landscape, flora and fauna, and the people he encountered on his journeys. He also includes detailed maps and illustrations, as well as accounts of his interactions with Aboriginal tribes and his observations on their culture and way of life.Overall, Australia Twice Traversed is a fascinating account of one man's incredible journeys through the rugged and unforgiving terrain of Australia's interior, and a valuable historical record of the early exploration of the continent.Australia Twice Traversed.
