This work comprises day-by-day account of the death camp's operation, from its planning in the winter of 1939-40 to its liberation in January 1945.;Most of the documents concerning Auschwitz and its annexes, Birkenau and Monowitz, were destroyed by the Nazis as defeat approached, yet much survived to be collected in the archives of the Official Auschwitz Museum. These include decrees by the Nazi government, and the Gestapo; orders from the commandant's office; transport and admission lists; morgue registers and bunker lists; and financial accounts. Added to these are eyewitness accounts, reports smuggled out by the camp resistance movement, and material from numerous archives.;Combined and arranged chronologically, they form the "Auschwitz Chronicle". Included is every name that could be culled from each source, providing a kind of epitaph for the millions of victims who were anonymously murdered.
