Germany's mis fortune at that time was so very great, not because her industry, her agriculture, her literature, and her art had been destroyed, not because two thirds of her people had perished during the war, but because her national unity had been lost and consequently her proud position among the nations of Europe. Fortunes might be te gained, cities and towns might be rebuilt, her population might increase; but would it be possible to become again one people and one nation, undivided and powerful as of old? Would theirs not be the fate of the children of Israel, who, when once divided by internal dissensions, were overpowered by their enemies and driven from the land of their fathers, to be scattered over all the countries of the earth?
