Publisher's Synopsis
On the tour explores the participation of Jews in popular culture between Vienna, Budapest and New York around 1900. The emerging mass culture and a simultaneous mass migration movement influenced each other and offered special framework conditions for Jewish-non-Jewish encounters: A new quality of mobility connected the Capitals of the Habsburg Monarchy and the United States and shaped society. Mobility was reflected in popular culture. Folk singers, vocal humorists and soubrettes took up being on the move. This offered opportunities to discuss prejudices, anti-Semitism, nationalism or gender boundaries, but also brought accusations and allegations to popular culture, such as that it served as a cover for secret prostitution or that it was the downfall of "high" culture.
