The book deals with the calculation basics and stepwise formulation of expressions for energy eigenvalues and eigenvectors of free atoms and of the crystal field states of dn metal ions. Different symmetry environments are considered; a composite approach, based on angular momentum operators, group theoretical ideas and perturbation method, achieves the objective. Perturbations are applied successively to an initial zero-order central field state of the free atom or dn ion. Four successive perturbationscoulombic, crystal field, spin-orbit and external magnetic field are included within the ambit of calculations. A short incisive treatment of susceptibilities and magnetic moments of dn complex ions is also included in the book.
