Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Assyrian Deeds and Documents Recording the Transfer of Property, Vol. 1: Including the So-Called Private Contracts, Legal Decisions and Proclamations Preserved in the Kouyunjik Collections of the British Museum, Chiefly of the 7th Century B. C.; Cuneiform d104s

The issue of the Catalogue first made such systematic study possible. It has made known within narrow limits the extent of the existing material. T o render the texts of these documents more widely available for students is the purpose of this work. The present volume contains the Cuneiform texts. The second volume, already far advanced towards completion, will contain a general introduction, detailed commentary, full index of proper names, a glossary, and lists or tables of prices, occupations, classes of goods, etc. To that volume reference must be made for all information I can give as to the literature of the subject and the meaning of the texts. By thus separating the auxiliary material from the texts, the perpetual inconvenience of reference from one page to another will be reduced to a minimum.
