Publisher's Synopsis
The ten foci of interest in these essays represent quite different geographic regions in India, embracing both the large and small scale, the metropolitan as well as the provincial, and both inner-city building and later additions to the historic core. Whereas some of the environments are described as separate entities and in terms of unbroken historical development, others are viewed in relation to a specific context - such as the water supply at Jodhpur and the refurbishment of Lad Bazaar at Hyderbad.;The contributors to this book are historians, art historians and architects - Europeans as well as Indians - with a common belief that the architecture of yesterday has much to teach us. Several of the essays are supplemented with drawings and maps made by the contributors themselves. Photographs from various archives are also included.
