The Research Institute for Peace and Security (RIPS) is an independent research centre established in Tokyo in 1978. It has four aims: to conduct research and studies concerned with international peace and security; to promote greater public understanding of security issues; to make policy recommendations where appropriate; and to advance an international exchange of views and contacts with related institutes and specialists throughout the world.;Since the Research Institute for Peace and Security first published "Asian Security" in 1984, this series has evolved to give an authoritative annual overview of the political, economic, and security developments in the Pacific Basin. This is complemented by unbiased analysis of the foreign policy stance of the Soviet Union and United States towards these countries.
