Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from As I Saw It

At the time, saint-dizier was an important artillery centre some thirty miles behind the front. It was covered with snow and ice that night I descended into its streets, and lay dark and silent under the threat of an air-raid, and for a while I slipped and slid about in its obscurity rather at a loss to discover where chance was going to lead me next.

I should say that at this period I was not a little troubled by the fact that, despite my uniform and rank, I still spoke French none too well. I had a latent self-consciousness and awkwardness towards every new address. I might be able to ask and answer questions for a while unsuspected; but in a conversation of any length my accent must out, and sooner or later there would come into the other's eyes a puzzled, half-inattentive look that in the end as good as cried aloud: Who the devil is this foreigner in the uni form of a French officer? And if, generally, I made a point of defining myself at once, there were moments when this was not practical or easy to do.
