Publisher's Synopsis

Aria Da Capo is a one-act play written by the American poet and playwright Edna St. Vincent Millay. The play was first performed in 1919 and is a satirical commentary on the futility of war and the human condition. The play begins with a prologue in which two actors, Pierrot and Columbine, introduce themselves to the audience and explain that they will be performing a play within a play. The main play is set in a pastoral landscape and features two shepherds, Thyrsis and Corydon, who are best friends. As the play progresses, the two shepherds become embroiled in a feud over a piece of land. The feud escalates into a full-blown war, with the shepherds recruiting soldiers and engaging in battle. However, as the war rages on, the shepherds begin to question the point of their conflict and the toll it is taking on their lives. In the end, the play concludes with a reprise of the prologue, in which Pierrot and Columbine reflect on the absurdity of the human condition and the inevitability of death. Aria Da Capo is a powerful and thought-provoking play that explores themes of war, conflict, and the human experience.Pierrot: My Only Love, You Are So Fundamental! . . .
