Stephenson, celebrated then above all living engineers, fitted up a car to compete with it, and was beaten in the contest. But the locomotive introduced a speed that was fatal to the Winans' wheel; and that, which was perfect in reference to the state of things at the date of the invention, was thrown aside when new developments in the application of steam substituted thirty and forty miles an hour in place of six and seven.
