Publisher's Synopsis

Virginia Woolf's celebrated essay A Room of One's Own is looked upon as Manifesto of Feminism. But, is there any dichotomy in Virginia Woolf's promise and practice? Are her women portrayed in shorter fiction as "yes-Women.?" She has advocated for intense awareness of a woman's identity, raising her consciousness and efforts for dismantling hegemony of patriarchy in every sphere of our life. She has also appealed women for being educated, liberated, assertive, financially independent and having a room of her own and own income for leading a harmonious and wholesome life. But, there is an ostensible gap in her prophecy and practice. In her shorter fiction her women are intensely conscious of their feminine problems and strongly aware of the machinations of the patriarchal forces curbing their dreams and desires. Evidently, they have the grievances: but they hardly do anything to dismantle the hegemony of patriarchy and wriggle out of the claustrophobic cobweb of masculinity. Which is why, they appear to be "yes-women" in the orbit of family and periphery of marriage. Was she afraid of any confrontation against those with conservative views? Why did she shy away from portraying radical views on sex, marriage and society in her fiction? Was there any dichotomy and ambivalence in her attitude? Did she advocate what 'they should be' in her non-fiction, and portray 'what they are' in the then-prevailing-society, in her fictions? Is the cultivation of 'androgynous mind' a panacea for leading a just and humane family and society? How should a woman look upon and treat a male - as an opposite sex or a neighbouring sex? All these questions have been addressed in the present Book -"Are Women in Virginia Woolf yes-Women?"
