On February 17, 1950, a LIRR eastbound passenger train from Penn Station collided with a westbound train from Babylon at 10:43 pm on the Gauntlet, a temporary overlapping track that was installed to facilitate a grade elevation project at Rockville Centre. Random fate played a cruel part in the lives of many that found themselves on the trains that evening.
