This little fruit is a member of the Malvaceae family and goes by several names: aratiles, muntingia calabura, jamaican cherry, and Panama berry. Although it has spread from its Neotropical homeland, this tree can be found in many tropical and subtropical areas across the globe. When ripe, the cherry-sized fruit turns a vibrant crimson or orange color.
You may taste the sweet and somewhat sour flavor of aratiles fruit. Fresh is best, but it can also be used to make jams, jellies, and drinks.
