Publisher's Synopsis
Aral is a collection of poems that derives from the author's journey to the Aral Sea on the border between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. This is the site of one of the world's worst environmental disasters, as the Soviet diversion of rivers to irrigate Uzbek cotton fields led to the rapid desertification of this formerly fertile land. In oblique, indirect fragments, Sonia Bueno builds up a portrait of a damaged land.
