This novel is fundamentally a love story about the romance of Eddie Edwards, a Catholic college professor, and Andrea Peregrino, a hereditary Witch. But it is also a vehicle for speculations about an alternative history of the beliefs underlying Western civilization. Was Jesus the Nazarene an enlightened Gnostic who knew he was empowered as a prophet like Moses? Was Mary called Magdalene his wife and true successor? Did Mary found communities in Alexandria and Provence based on Jesus' actual teachings? Were those teachings saved by the people called the Cathars? Were the Witches of Italy the true successors of Mary? Is magic a side effect of quantum fluctuations? Can we ever understand how oour own minds work? Those are the questions discussed by Eddie and Andrea as they flee for their lives from the forces that want to hide the newly recovered documents that give a very different history from what Eddie had believed.
