Publisher's Synopsis

Since its discovery there is hardly any branch of science that has not been probed by using Moessbauer spectroscopy as one of the major techniques. Amongst the bulk of the output in the inorganic world this technique is gainfully employed by geochemists and mineralogists the world over.;This volume is intended to offer to the graduate and research students in geochemistry, mineralogy and archeology an introduction to the principles involved, and an exposure to the profound scope of Moessbauer spectroscopy in various fields of earth sciences, including the extra-terrestrial mineral studies. Some typical geochemical calculations like cation ordering in crystal lattices and its thermodynamics, dating of mineral and archeological samples are some of the recent advancements on the top of the extended studies on mixed valences, oxidation ratios and electron delocalization in mineral systems. Recent studies on glassy materials, NNN effects and more importantly the high pressure studies (with ruby-laser calibration) have been included in this volume with special reference to the relevance of the results in the petrogenesis of the upper mantle.
