Of important ethnographical features the xylophone (kor balanya) is confined to the Kora'nko, the loom (plate I) to Susu, Mendi and Limba with few exceptions, pottery mainly to the Mendi, though this is due principally to the introduction of European pots, mainly of iron.
The general form of the house is everywhere the same, save where the rectangular house has penetrated, coming from Freetown. It is circular with, as a rule, small rooms outside the main wall, but under the main roof. The thatch is of grass tied down on poles secured to each other by a series of circular rings (plate II) The substructure of the walls is of wood, upright poles sunk in the ground with horizontal pieces to give rigidity. The portion of the house outside the main wall which is not taken up with the konko, or small room, is often fenced with a low wall and forms a veranda in front and behind, which is sometimes on a level with the ground, sometimes raised above and approached by steps.
