Vor allem sind die mikroskopischen Methoden der Unter suchung der Gesteine, der Petrographie, dienstbar gemacht werden, und nur der mikroskopischen Untersuchung dankt diese die enormen Fortschritte, welche sie im letzten Drittel des 19. Jahr hunderts zu verzeichnen hatte. Erst in den allerletzten Jahren wurden dieselben Methoden, welche fur den Petregraphen so reiche Fruchte gezeitigt, in ihrer ganzen Ausdehnung auch auf die che mische Forschung ubertragen, we sie sich allerdings nur mit Muhe Eingang verschaffen konnen. Aber die wenigen chemisch-mikro skopischen Untersuchungen, welche von durchaus modernem Stand punkt ausgehend sich alle Hilfsmittel der mikroskopischen Technik dienstbar zu machen verstanden, haben Resultate ergeben, welche in hohem Mae verheiungsvoll sind.
